Mario Gamba’s ‘Cucina del Sole’ in Bogenhausen: a fixture of Italian haute cuisine in Munich since 1994.
Falstaff Restaurant- & Gasthausguide Deutschland 2026: 91 points; 50 Top Italy 2026: no. 10 of the best Italian restaurants in the world
Mario Gamba, born in Bergamo, opened Acquarello in Bogenhausen in 1994 and calls his cooking ‘Cucina del Sole’, cuisine of the sun. The menu follows the seasons and combines Italian tradition with ideas from around the world; the autumn 2026 menu features, for example, a duck liver tiramisù with pumpkin, tortelli with beetroot, wasabi and apple, and a babà napoletano, the rum-soaked yeast cake from Naples. Gamba’s training took him to Gualtiero Marchesi, among others.
For around 25 years the restaurant held a Michelin star, which it lost in 2025. Gamba has not changed his concept, and by his account demand has even risen since. The 50 Top Italy ranking lists Acquarello in 2026 as no. 10 of the best Italian restaurants in the world, and Falstaff rates it at 91 points in the same year. The dining room is elegant and preserves the style of the 1990s; the five-course menu costs €186, the wine pairing €89.
A good way in is the three-course business lunch of starter, pasta and main course, served Tuesday to Friday for €85. This makes Acquarello suitable for a focused business lunch as well as for a special evening with the full menu. In autumn 2026 the programme also includes a truffle evening and several four-hands dinners with guest chefs such as Matteo Ferrantino and Christian Jürgens.
Good to know: Three-course business lunch Tuesday to Friday from noon to 2pm for €85. Closed on Mondays, open only in the evening at weekends and on public holidays.
