Hippocampus, named after the seahorse, was founded in 1996 by Sergio Artiaco and Cosimo Ruggiero. Today Gianfranco Artiaco and Domenico ‘Mimmo’ Castiglia continue to run the restaurant in Bogenhausen, with Castiglia at the stove as head chef. The dining room, with walnut panelling, marble floors and Art Nouveau lamps, feels like an old-school ristorante, complete with white tablecloths and attentive service. In good weather food is also served outside.
The cooking is seasonal and combines great classics with purist yet creative dishes; it treats fish with particular care. The autumn 2026 menu features, for example, ditalini, small tube pasta, with octopus ragù, turbot fillet with beetroot and sauce béarnaise, or veal fillet with mashed potato, parmesan and black truffle. If you would rather not choose, order the four-course surprise menu for €89.50, with either fish or meat, or with wine pairing for €130.
The wine list has around 160 Italian references and a wide range of wines by the glass. From Wednesday to Friday there is a two-course lunch menu for €39.50, a good opportunity for a quiet business meal. A caviar selection complements the menu, and the restaurant can also be booked for private parties. Hippocampus suits guests looking for classic Italian cooking in a refined setting.
Good to know: Open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, closed on Monday and Tuesday. Two-course lunch menu Wednesday to Friday for €39.50.
